Plain-English Rating Guide
How Neighborhood Ratings Work
We track ground-floor shops, restaurants, cafés, bakeries, salons, and fitness studios over a rolling 12-month window—leaving out upper-floor offices, medical suites, and mailbox companies:
- Healthy (6 neighborhoods — Green): Beverly Hills, Larchmont, San Vicente (Brentwood), Abbot Kinney, Montana Ave., Manhattan Beach — Full, vibrant streets with very few empty storefronts and more openings than closings.
- Improving (7 neighborhoods — Blue): West Melrose, East Melrose, Silver Lake, W. 3rd St., Main St., Robertson Blvd, Westwood Village — A strong wave of new openings is steadily filling previously empty storefronts.
- Mixed (1 neighborhood — Amber): Third St. Promenade — New openings and recent closures are roughly even over the past 12 months.
- Slowing (Red): Reserved for neighborhoods where ground-floor closures significantly outpace new openings.

How we measure this neighborhood’s storefront pulse ▾
- Opening: Verified ground-floor storefront openings (shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, salons, and fitness studios) from city records, newly issued liquor licenses, and verified local reporting, deduplicated so each storefront counts once.
- Closing: Verified ground-floor storefront closings along this neighborhood stretch over the past 12 months.
- Beverly Hills doesn't publish its general business-tax roll online, so storefront counts combine newly issued California liquor licenses, Chamber of Commerce new-business lists, and verified local reporting.
- Businesses that announced a future opening are listed under 'Coming soon' below and are only counted as openings once they open their doors.
How ratings work: Rated Improving when 12-month storefront openings outpace closures and steadily fill prior empty spaces (Healthy means full, vibrant blocks with very few empty storefronts; Mixed means new openings and closures are roughly even; Slowing is under 45% openings).

- Closing: Verified ground-floor storefront closings along this neighborhood stretch over the past 12 months.
- We filter city records to ground-floor storefronts (shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, salons, and fitness studios) and leave out upper-floor offices, medical and legal suites, holding companies, parking operators, and mailbox addresses.
- Most of West Melrose is in West Hollywood (which keeps a separate tax roll from the City of LA), so we combine City of LA storefront registrations on Melrose Place and east of Doheny with newly issued liquor licenses and verified West Hollywood storefront openings and closings.
How ratings work: Rated Improving when 12-month storefront openings outpace closures and steadily fill prior empty spaces (Healthy means full, vibrant blocks with very few empty storefronts; Mixed means new openings and closures are roughly even; Slowing is under 45% openings).
